Mitigation Action Facility Project: Advancing Clean Energy in the Philippines
At OceanPixel, we believe that tackling climate change requires innovative solutions and collaborative efforts across industries. In 2024, we’re proud to be part of the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF) project, specifically focused on the Philippines – Tidal Stream initiative. This partnership is pivotal in advancing the Philippines’ clean energy transition, especially in off-grid islands that depend on fossil fuel-based power.
Why Tidal Stream Energy?
The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, faces unique energy challenges. Many of these islands are not connected to the national grid and rely on diesel generators for electricity. This reliance on inefficient and costly energy sources not only impacts local economies but also contributes to high levels of environmental pollution.
The Tidal Stream Energy (TSE) initiative seeks to address this issue by harnessing the power of tidal currents to generate renewable energy. When paired with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, TSE can provide a cleaner, more reliable, and cost-effective energy solution for remote islands.
OceanPixel’s Role in the Project
As part of the MAF project, OceanPixel is working to implement TSE hybrid systems in the Philippines’ off-grid islands. The goal is to replace fossil fuel-based electricity generation with renewable energy sources, significantly reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable energy future.
Key aspects of the project include:
Financial Support: Through long-term concessional loans and capital grants, the project is making TSE hybrid systems financially viable for local communities.
Technical Cooperation: The project supports local governments by adapting regulations and streamlining the licensing process for TSE projects.
Expected Impact: The installation of 64 MW of TSE hybrid systems, coupled with approximately 100 MWh of battery storage, will bring significant environmental benefits and reduce reliance on diesel-based power.
Environmental Impact
One of the standout features of the project is its potential to directly mitigate 1.2 million tons of CO₂ equivalent over the life of the TSE hybrid systems. By replacing fossil fuel-based electricity with renewable energy, the project will help the Philippines significantly cut its greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
OceanPixel’s Commitment to Sustainability
OceanPixel is dedicated to advancing sustainability, and our involvement in the Mitigation Action Facility project is a reflection of our long-standing commitment to clean energy solutions. By collaborating with key stakeholders in the energy sector, we are helping to create a future where island communities in the Philippines can rely on renewable, sustainable energy.
We believe that this project not only provides tangible environmental benefits but also sets the stage for broader adoption of TSE and other renewable energy technologies across the region.
The Mitigation Action Facility Project represents a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Philippines, and OceanPixel is proud to be a key player in this transition. With innovative energy solutions like tidal stream energy, we are helping to create a world where clean, reliable, and affordable energy is accessible to all, especially in remote and off-grid communities.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our work in advancing the Philippines’ clean energy future and making a global impact!
