OceanPixel Joins ADB Knowledge Event on Marine Renewable Energy
November 8, 2024 – OceanPixel was honored to participate in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Knowledge Event on Marine Renewable Energy and the Blue Economy. This event, held virtually, brought together a multidisciplinary panel of experts to explore the critical role of marine renewable energy (MRE) in decarbonization and its potential to drive sustainable growth in the Blue Economy.
The Global Significance of Marine Renewable Energy
Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) leverages marine resources and spaces to produce renewable energy, playing a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions. The Blue Economy (BE), defined as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, job creation, and ecosystem preservation, serves as the framework for integrating MRE into sustainable development strategies.
This webinar addressed MRE’s potential in diverse contexts, including archipelagic nations, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and fragile or conflict-affected regions.
Key Highlights from the Event
Offshore Wind Energy James Sutherland provided insights into the offshore wind energy industry, including projections for growth, existing challenges, and technological requirements.
Green Energy for the Blue Economy Cameron McNatt emphasized the role of wave energy in supporting the Blue Economy, presenting case studies and exploring challenges and innovative solutions.
Tidal Energy: History, Challenges, and Opportunities Andrew Aveyard shared the evolution of tidal energy, addressing its resources, future potential, and the challenges it faces.
Ocean Energy: A Net Zero Roadmap for 2050 Henry Jeffrey outlined the IEA-OES roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, focusing on the development of 300GW of ocean energy capacity.
Marine Renewable Energy and Blue Economy Integration Nick Lambert discussed strategies to integrate marine renewable energy into various Blue Economy sub-sectors, emphasizing holistic solutions and innovative pathways for sustainable development.
Marine Renewable Energy Insights Michael Abundo contributed by highlighting the integration of tidal, wave, floating solar, floating wind, and OTEC energy sources into marine environments. He discussed the economic and environmental drivers for MRE adoption and emphasized the importance of site selection and resource availability in successful projects.
